OLCS is an amateur choral society that developed from the Tandridge District ‘Combined Choirs’ with a history going back to the year 1947. We aim to provide an opportunity for people in and around the Tandridge district to sing in a choir under professional direction and for audiences to enjoy good music locally at reasonable cost.
Singing is good for you and we warmly welcome new members. The choir is a friendly, social choir committed to working together and to setting and raising standards in our choral singing. We are affiliated to Making Music which both represents and supports amateur performing groups throughout the country and we are member of Tandridge Community Arts whose job is to develop arts in the area. We rehearse on Monday evenings at the Oxted United Reformed Church, Bluehouse Lane, Oxted, RH8 0AA. The choir year usually commences on the second Monday in September, for any given year.
Our repertoire includes Classical, Romantic and 20th Century composers. In recent years we have sung music composed by Handel, Bach, Rossini, Mozart, Elgar, Fauré, Britten and Rutter. On occasion we spice up our programme with lighter music using material from, for example, 'Encores for Choirs'. A full listing of previous performances can be found under the Past Performances section of this website.
Our Director of Music is Michael Burbidge. Michael is well known as a versatile, experienced and highly professional musician. As well as training choirs he is in demand as Musical Director of many contemporary stage performances and also as a teacher and accompanist. He ensures a balanced programme that offers the reassurance of the familiar together with the excitement and anticipation of the new.
